Ongoing Protests at Russian Consulate in NYC Demand End to War Against Ukraine

Since yesterday, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine, shifts of protestors have gathered outside the imposing Russian Consulate building at 9 East 91st Street. Around 2:00 PM today, approximately 30 protestors maintained a vigil, remnants of a larger crowd from this morning, everyone kept at a distance from the stone edifice by NYPD barricades.

A woman who had been there since 10 AM, and did not want to be identified by name, told us, “We will continue protesting until the Russians are defeated.” Other protestors said they had been there the day before and were returning to protest again today, and would keep on demonstrating until Russia withdrew from Ukraine.

One sign lamented that Ukraine had given up its nuclear weapons in the early 1990s but was now not receiving the protection the world owed it against an authoritarian aggressor. Another reminded the world how similar Putin’s authoritarianism is to the actions of Adolf Hitler, who attacked his peaceful neighbors in the late 1930s.

In multiple languages, the protestors were letting the bureaucrats in the building know that Russia is the aggressor against a peaceful democracy.
