Jake Goldstein: Siamese Dream strikes a rare emotional nerve. Heavy but not quite angry, complex but catchy, there’s a duality and a melancholy—the irony of the follow-up’s title is not lost on me—that feels uniquely adolescent.
There’s something so particular about the emotional highs and lows that come with your teenage years. Whether the feeling be that “today is the greatest,” or “life’s a bummer,” the feeling of isolation and loneliness coupled with the accessibility of stellar hooks makes for in my eyes a flawless record.
The sheer amount of perfect riffs packed into 13 tracks takes me back to first playing along to records and discovering my identity as a result. Throw it on when you’re sad, throw it on when you’re feeling victorious.
No matter which end of the spectrum it’ll match the extreme, and despite Corgan’s please of “I ain’t free” it’ll make you feel the contrary.
