The latest film from writer/director Lena Dunham (creator of HBO’s Girls), Sharp Stick is a coming-of-age story that zeroes in on Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth), a character reviewer Chad Byrnes describes as “a wide-eyed, 26-year-old virgin who dresses like a Seventies grade-school teacher and has a naivete and reserve usually seen in preteens—or the Amish.” Although the actors generally nail their roles (Jon Bernthal does a fantastic job as a husband and father whom a blushing Sarah Jo pulls into an affair) viewers might ask whether they’re watching a farce or a heartfelt drama as the narrative vacillates between high camp and contemplative tear-jerker. Dunham is willing to take chances and so, while Sharp Stick might be unfocused—even sloppy—it is never boring.
