When Peaches emerged with The Teaches of Peaches album in 2000, she was hard to categorize musically and sonically. As music critic Brett Callwood notes in his feature on the Canadian musician, “she was a much-needed breath of fresh air. Her messages of female empowerment hit hard in a still male-dominated music industry, and her artistic stock rose fast.”
During a recent Zoom interview Peaches told Callwood, “I really feel, you can feel in the live shows, that people know why they’re there. They know why they’re there and they’re really happy to be there to celebrate. I think that’s a combination also of the pandemic and getting introspective — ‘what do I really want, what do I really need, what is important to me?’
Now based in Berlin, Peaches is crisscrossing the U.S. for The Teaches of Peaches Anniversary Tour. You can read Callwood’s full interview with the influential artist and check out a selection of videos here. —VV editors
