Pussy Riot Won’t Stop

Pussy Riot, the musical collective founded in Moscow in 2011 and known for protesting Vladimir Putin’s policies then and now, has released a new mixtape, Matriarchy Now. As Brett Callwood points out in his take on the band’s upcoming show in Los Angeles, “With everything that’s going on in the world, could there be a more important voice than that of the collective Pussy Riot?”

Released roughly on the 10-year anniversary of the sentencing by a Russian court of some of Pussy Riot’s founders to a two-year stint on trumped-up charges of “hooliganism,” the song collection includes “Prince Charming,” which opens with lyrics that take a swipe at Disney-esque conventions:

I got—I gotta—a big magic wand and I use it all the time
Take this stupid fairytale and make it all mine
Go-gonna change up the plot ’cause this slipper never fit
Won’t be slayin’ dragons, I could tame ’em, make ’em sit

As Callwood also notes, Pussy Riot has protested politics in the U.S. as well, most recently by hanging a 45-foot MATRIARCHY NOW banner at the Texas State Capitol to call out the national attack on reproductive rights.
