They come every year, riding the long, vertiginous escalator up from the end-of-the-line 7 train stop—anime characters come to life; marquee horror characters like the Mummy, Frankenstein’s monster, and generations of vampires; comic book superheroes (sometimes wedged into overextended stretch-fabric costumes); and any number of fantasy avatars toting weapons ranging from the medieval to the futuristic (all made from plastic, balsa wood, and other nonlethal materials, though the best of them look as if they could bring some serious blunt trauma to the less well-armed cosplayers).
The printed page from which Comic Con draws its name is less and less prevalent with every passing year—pixels on screens have pride of place across the vast Javits Center exhibition floor. But those who put flesh inside fabric are keeping fantasy corporeal, and when photographer C.S. Muncy set up his camera and lights, they came to play in the fantasy field of dreams—the psychos, animated toys, Imperial Troopers, magicians, ghosts, and, doubling down on the make-believe, life-size Lego figures representing such comic book heroes as Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon.
