Joel Jackson had three objectives when he designed Lettuce Lake Conservation Park: to make it an enjoyable place to experience nature, provide environmental education, and preserve it for future generations.
Jackson paid attention to detail in the design of the park, including how the land would drain and where amenities would be placed.
The park features a variety of natural habitats including a hardwood swamp forest, hardwood hammocks, pine flatwoods plant communities, and more. There are also picnic areas, playgrounds, an exercise trail and boardwalk with an observation tower.
Originally 117 acres large, Jackson secured additional funding that doubled the size of the park.
The nature center at Lettuce Lake Park was renamed the Joel E. Jackson Nature Center on August 31st in honor of all his contributions during his career with Save Our Bay group (which kickstarted local environmental movement), City of Tampa Parks & Recreation Department ,and Hillsborough County Parks & Conservation Board.
