World Vegan Month: How to Show Support Even If You’re Not Vegan

Those of us who are not vegan consume food without giving much thought to the origins of our protein fare. Vegans, on the other hand, make a conscious decision to abstain from animal products, typically in the interest of animal welfare. If you’re non-vegan, but have vegan friends or family members, this is a good time to show a little support.  Let’s show a little love veganism and our friends who practice this lifestyle. After all, what better time than World Vegan Month?

When is World Vegan Month and how is it celebrated?

World Vegan Month is celebrated annually in November, regardless of where in the world you are. World Vegan Month is not just a celebration for the vegan community; it’s also a chance for non-vegan supporters to spread awareness and encourage others to support the cause.

During World Vegan Month, people also promote veganism by sharing the benefits of veganism. According to The Vegan Society, “veganism is not just a diet, but a compassionate lifestyle choice where you do not consume or use any animal products, as far as possible and practicable in this non-vegan world.”

Unlike vegetarians — who exclude meat, poultry, fish and seafood from their diets — vegans take it a step further by also eliminating dairy and eggs. In addition, vegans typically do not wear animal skin like leather or suede, and avoid beauty products containing ingredients derived from animals. The goal is to reduce animal suffering caused by human exploitation for industry and commercial products, and to achieve a positive environmental impact.

Large scale celebrations during World Vegan Month include vegan organizations gathering in major cities and setting up stands that offer vegan delicacies. They also educate people about veganism at these venues.

As for small scale celebrations, these refer to a single person, be it a vegan or not, coming up with their own little way of promoting veganism. This can happen between them and their families and friends.

How can non-vegans show their support for the cause?

Non-vegans can show their support by doing the following:

  • Taking a pledge and attempt to go vegan for the month of November
  • Whipping up vegan dishes and beverages and offering it to families, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues
  • Solely ordering plant-based foods in restaurants
  • Taking to social media and informing the public with regards to veganism and how it provides tons of benefits to a person and the environment
  • Educate yourself on why people transition to veganism in the first place.
