Bigger and Better: 7 of The Coolest New York World Records

If the city is called “The Big Apple,” then there’s your indication that people here go big! After all, New York is also the largest city by population! Moreover, lots of New York world records were set in NYC (and neighboring cities) — some may leave you in awe, and some might just make you hungry. Hint: one restaurant once made the largest pastry that’s oh, so dear to us New Yorkers!

7 Awesome New York World Records

1. Fastest half marathon run in a suit!

We often see NYC-based men looking dapper in their suits — but what isn’t a common sight to see is a man wearing a suit while running a half marathon! Last March 19, 2017, Chris Estwanik sprinted past Wall Street in his suit and Oakley sunglasses at the NYC Half. He finished the race and bagged the 55th place — and it only took him 1:11:36, which is the world’s fastest half marathon run in a suit.

2. The most expensive painting sold

The New York art scene is unlike any other! Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi” was auctioned through Christie’s (at the Rockefeller Center) for a whopping $450,312,500 last 2017. The painting is believed to have been made by the Renaissance artist sometime around 1499 to 1510 — which means that the painting, which is a depiction of Jesus, was also made during the time that Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.

3. Largest bagel ever made

It’s hard to imagine the city without our beloved bagels. In fact, the pastry is so well-loved, that Brueggers Bagels decided to make the largest one in the world last 2004 — at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The bagel weighed around 868 pounds. Don’t worry! No bagel serving was wasted — as they were fed to the visitors who donated over $2,000 to the food banks in Albany, Rochester, and Syracuse.

4. Fastest visit to all NYC subway stations

The traffic in NYC can be difficult to bear — good thing we have the subway! Even then, it’s still an extremely busy subway — according to the MTA, around 2.4 million people take the subway to commute. That’s why it can be surprising to some that last 2017, one man, Matthew Ahn, decided to visit all 468 train stations! All in 21 hours and 49 minutes.

5. Most cocktails made in 1 hour

Sometimes, it can be nice to take a sip of a cocktail to cap off the night, a glass or two, usually — what isn’t usual, however, is to make 1,905 cocktails! But that’s exactly what Sheldon Wiley did last 2014. And he made all of those in one hour at Bounce Sporting Club.

6. The longest line of hotdogs

Many of us have been “rescued” by a hotdog stand or food truck before when we were, say, starving but late for an interview! It’s easy and quick to eat. In 2016, Nathan’s Famous celebrated the restaurant’s 100th anniversary by lining up 1,916 pieces of hotdogs at the Grand Central Terminal. The reason for the number? It’s the year the restaurant was founded.

7. Most expensive French fries

Here’s a fairly recent New York world record — the most expensive French fries were made last July 13, 2021, when it was “National French Fry Day!” Serendipity 3’s “Creme de la Creme Pommes Frites” cost around $200. What made this delectable snack so expensive was that the French fries were made from Upstate Chipperbecc potatoes that have been blanched in Dom Perignon Champagne and J. LeBlanc French &5 was then cooked three times with pure goose fat from Southwest France. If that wasn’t *boujee* enough, the fries were then seasoned with Guerande Truffle Salt and Urbani Summer Truffle Oil. Finally, it was topped with Crete Senesi Pecorino Tartufello.

To Wrap Up,

New York world records seem to be a mixture of quirky and cool — but, hey, isn’t that what we’re mostly like anyway? That’s why we can expect that more world records will be made soon!
