What do murder, cheating on your spouse, and bumbling outer borough vampires have in common? According to reviewer Erin Maxwell they all represent the ugly realities of the world these days.
First, there’s Only Murders in the Building, in its second season on Hulu, in which Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short find laughs around a bloody murder (perpetrated with a knitting needle), due in large part because “the hijinks of the trio keep the audience engaged.”
In the case of Loot, Maya Rudolph, playing the dumped wife of a sleazy Bezos-level billionaire, “elicits laughs just by standing in a designer dress.” Still, Maxwell questions whether the show can find new territory that Ted Lasso hasn’t already conquered.
And just a ferry ride away, we get Maxwell’s take on the “fang gang of Staten Island” in What We Do In the Shadows. The show has received many accolades since it premiered four years ago and Maxwell points out, “Everyone involved deserves praise for bringing this kind of mad, macabre hijinks to television. What’s a bit of bloodshed compared to the horrors of everyday living these days, right?”
