Former Guns N’ Roses / Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum wanted to be in a band again. Following the breakup of Velvet Revolver in 2009 and the subsequent, tragic death of vocalist Scott Weiland, Sorum has kept himself busy but he admits that he’s missed the band dynamic. He told music critic Brett Callwood that one of his initial endeavors was Kings of Chaos—a party jam band involving some of his famous friends performing rock ’n’ roll classics.
But, as Sorum says, things have evolved: “I got involved in doing that kind of thing going on 15, 16 years ago. I started an L.A. band called Camp Freddy—that was me and Dave Navarro, and we used to invite a hit list of people. We had a pretty good run for 11 or 12 years. At one point I decided that I wanted to do my own version of this, because it was all over the place. We did all kinds of stuff and had a really good time, but it was time for me to move on. I started reaching out to friends of mine, saying hey, you guys want to go to South Africa? I called Slash and Duff, got Glenn Hughes and Robin Zander, Billy Gibbons, Steven Tyler, and all these guys said yes. I started putting together collectives of all these musicians.”
