Despite making up half the population, women are grossly underrepresented in the movie industry. From directors to producers to lead actors, women are a minority in nearly every role behind the camera and in front of it. What’s even more alarming is that this problem is only getting worse; in 2017, women held only 18 percent of executive production roles, down from 25 percent in 1998. This marginalization has serious consequences not just for women but for everyone involved in the movie-making process. There are some women, however, who break through barriers and get their voices heard.
