Steven Spielberg has been entertaining audiences for nearly half-a-century with such groundbreaking blockbusters and epic dramas as Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List. As film reviewer Chad Byrnes points out, Spielberg’s latest, The Fabelmans, is part of a recent trend in which filmmakers reexamine their own lives—think of Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light or James Gray’s Armageddon Time as just two examples. Byrnes writes that Spielberg’s coming-of-age confessional is a “heartfelt ode to cinema. As you’d expect, the director’s signature childlike wonderment sparkles in every frame. With the brilliant cinematographer Janusz Kaminski by his side, and a moody score by John Williams, it’s a nostalgic, sun-dappled, visually arresting journey into an artist’s origin. If only the plot was as compelling as the filmmaking.”
